Hello

I am Hillary Ongoyo Omoze, an upcoming Mathematics Teacher Educator (MTE) and lover of reflective dialogue. I appreciate the diversity and experiences that affect our current and forming identities. My research interests are in mathematics classroom discourse, what makes it productive and what makes it different from place to place.

My Story

I am a male cis-gender black African. I was born, raised, and schooled up to the undergraduate level in Kenya. I am an elementary school Mathematics Teacher Educator, a Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, and a Ph.D. Curriculum and Instruction (Mathematics Education) student at Purdue University. I am on the journey to becoming a conscious critical mathematics teacher educator, mathematics educator, and mathematics education researcher (Duncan-Andrade & Morrel, 2008; Wolfe, 2021). My sense of math learning is a deliberate effort to re-engineering teaching tools, the classroom environment, and the mindset of the math learning community (Masingila, 1993; Duncan-Andrade & Morrel, 2008; Stein, Russell, & Smith, (2011); Kimani et al., 2016; Battey et al., 2016). I believe every student has an innate ability to understand and do mathematics at their level of learning.
My training as a STEM teacher majoring in Mathematics Education prepared me for a lifetime dream of becoming a mathematics teacher educator and part of the solution to the challenges students face in learning and doing mathematics. I have taught mathematics for over ten years, interacted with students at different levels, trained in-service and pre-service teachers, and noticed gaps in pedagogical content knowledge resulting from either math content proficiency or teaching strategies in varying niches. I believe that excellent math content mastery and an excellent math educator are central to teaching and learning mathematics at all grade levels. My goal is to bring out the math potential in every student by creating an equitable math learning opportunity that leverages all availlable identities.
